Hello to you all,

I am in the process of restoring a wooden 36' cutter rigged sloop. So far that may sound normal, however I have the boat in my back paddock in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia where we are 2,000' above sea level. (with global warming, we may have a waterfront property in a couple of years!) If you would like to know how this came about my wife or analyst would be only too happy to explain.

Apart from having to answer the usual stupid questions about Noah and who I am going to take aboard, there is one problem perplexing me. That is how can I find out the history of my boat 'Perrigrine'. All that I know is that I bought it in Sydney, Australia several years ago and the seller said he believed it was built in England for a naval officer who sailed it to Australia which they seem to have done quite a lot since 1770.

How do I trace the history of a boat such as this?
Any ideas, suggestions, comments or random maritime scuttlebutt would be greatly appreciated.

There are quite a few local to you forum members that might know your boat. Hope it is a bit newer than a 1770 model.

You might check and see if it's in Australia's or England's registries. There may be some info carved somewhere in the framing like the bilge?

I would expect somewhere like a forward bulkhead or beam - easy to read, but not to remove. If you can find her uk official number then will give you plenty of details (builder / year and past owners). I would be surprised if she didn't have such a number. even a change to oz registry should not have needed to remove old number.

Also likely will have had a name change, so keep an eye out for any indicators.

Would also be useful to trace the designer - post up some photos and maybe folks will recognise her......give some clues for further research.
