teaching kids sailing

I represent a non-profit group. We have 37' Irwin, sail boat, which we would like to use for kids, to tech them sailing, keep them busy for the summer, the program will be free of charge for participants. Does any have comments or sugestions on this topic.

An Irwin 37 is great for big people training but what kids need is simple and fun, i. e. Sunfish, splash around, capsize sailing.

We have a free sailing program that starts kids out it Walker Bay 10, then Sunfish, then Hobie, then bigger boat training. Adults like the big boats. Kids like the little boats.

We're nonprofit too. Na Hoa Holomoku of Hawaii Yacht Club hilo-sailing.org.

Good Luck,

Thanks for your reply.
What I ment is more likly youth rather than kids. Since we don't have smaller boats I was thinking just to give them basic knowledge of sailing, a cruising and keep them occupied.

I was only thinking yesterday that I wished I had taken up sailing 40-45 years ago instead of coming to it 5 years ago.

Although I grew up in a beach suburb of Sydney and would often go down to the harbour and ride the ferries as a kid, it wasn't until 2002 that I actually 'bit the bullet' and took sailing lessons on Sydney Harbour.

Since then, I sail regularly on Pittwater (other people's boats) and have had a couple of extended cruising experiences in the Mediterranean. I LOVE IT!

Your plans are admirable and, as a teacher, I wish you all the best in your efforts to develop an understanding (if not love) of sailing/cruising in young people.
