Yachting in Maine in February

I am running a commuter boat in Maine in February. Every morning I go down to the boat and chip layers of ice, and probably gel coat, off of the boat. The floats that we work off of are ice rinks. Most mornings there is enough sea smoke to blind you. Most days it blows at least 20 with freezing spray.

I just thought I would keep things in perspective.

I remember going canoeing off of Harpswell one warm day in April a few years back. We had a nice day, visited a few small islands, and since we were feeling a bit hot after all that paddling, decided to go for a quick swim. The water was so cold I thought my skull would implode. So . . . I cannot imagine what the water temps are like up there now.

Hmmm. See you on Penobscot Bay in June, then!

I like a good bracing swim in Maine waters . . . in July or August . . . on a sunny day.

Just Googling around a bit, I found an interesting graph showing water temps in Boothbay Harbor:

http://www.maine.gov/dmr/rm/bbhenv/2009graphs.pdf

April (5C, or 41F) doesn't get more than a few degrees above the winter low temp (2.5C, or 36F), which seems to hit in late Feb. or early March.

June starts to improve (10C, or 50F). . . . .

The peak hits in August, at a balmy 17C, or 63F.

(My avatar pic is from Harpswell, near Stover's Cove. Love the whole coast of Maine, and can't wait to get back up there. . . .)
