Re: Wanted: Fat Sailors

It seems to be a never ending battle. I have lost 12 kilo this summer and fall and now have put 3 back on. Have to get re-motivated. Still working out, on a more sustainable level, but have relapsed on the diet. I must say though my fitness level is way above what it was last spring and that is something I am very happy with.

I saw the Medical specialist yesterday (follow up) about my arthritic knee and we have decided to keep doing what I am doing. No injections at this point but if it explodes we go for surgery. I am walking well and feeling good. Would rather be sailing though...

Uh oh... I have just forced myself to put the lid back on the pot of honey roasted cashew nuts. Old habits die hard!

SS, your weight loss is at a very good rate and hopefully sustainable. Glad you are feeling well and hope you have lots of good years to make up for those last few.

Re: Wanted: Fat Sailors

I was seeing a trainer, post major surgery, and he told me all I have to do is reduce my consumption by 500 calories a day and I would lose weight. All the research I have done on the matter say the same basic thing. Drink lots of water, eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, and get at least a 30 minute walk in every day. And stay away from processed foods period. Don't eat late at night. Now if I would just follow those instructions, I could probably lose weight.

Re: Wanted: Fat Sailors

I wasn't too heavy but all I've had to do it eliminate sugars from my diet and I lost 15# right off. No soda's, sweet foods like pies and pastries, no cereals, granola bars and even sweet fruits. And I've outlawed candy from even coming into the house. And next on the chet list is carbohydrates, especially rice and noodles. I just keep them down to a minimum.

That leaves me with low fat meats, wheat breads, veggies with sauces and beans. Occasionally, I'll veer off the diet for special events but make sure I go back on course. I found Mexican foods have the least fattening meals, in moderation.

I skimmed through the first part of the thread and apologize if this has been stated. Be careful with artificial sweeteners. It has been an ongoing debate that they may mess up your body's metabolic system. I can't use most of them because I have a bad reaction. It's worth the time to read up on it and decide for yourself.

Things to keep in mind: -

-not all fat people are by lifestyle but certainly the majority are.

-eat a stable healthy diet, exercise to burn 20% of that caloric intake.

-multiple small meals consisting of complex carbs and lean protein are best.

-drink water but be aware you CAN drink too much but it is typically in excess of 3 gallons per day but less if sweating.

-If you have chronic medical problems seek out a nutritionist. Many diets will do more harm than good.

-consider juicing

-most people fail dieting to a goal and ultimately gain back more than they lost.

-Losing weight requires a lifestyle/mentality change. Eat healthy but everything in moderation. Deprivation yields binging. If you are an Oreo addict have a set number a week.

-Weigh yourself first thing in the morning after you visit the head but before you eat or drink for the best daily number. Daily weighing is generally not recommended.

-Be aware if any medications you are prescribed cause weight gain. The number out there is staggering. There may be alternatives if you speak with you physician and pharmacist.

-eating healthy is more expensive than what most families spend now

I'm not a medical professional but my he!!ish journey taught me a lot. Be kind and patient with yourself and get help if you need it. If you like the group type options I was told the weight watchers point system is the best.

Good luck!

I hope you mean veggies. Fruits are just sugar once the pulp is removed. And sugar is sugar no matter what they say.

-eating healthy is more expensive than what most families spend now
That's a fact. Anyone bought a Porterhouse steak lately?

Re: Wanted: Fat Sailors

My Father was diabetic type II and he did a lot of research on artificial sweetners and his claim was they were worse for you than sugar. The sugars that are in fruits, due to the fiber are slower to assimilate than raw sugar and you don't get the insulin spike you do when you consume say a candy bar or such. When you consume raw sugar, or high fructose corn syrup it causes a spike in your insulin release. To counter act the over release of insulin your body tells you to eat something whether you are hungry or not, and of course if you eat something, then your insulin spikes up some more. It is a deadly cycle.

There are a lot of people out there that have a gluten allergy which can affect weight gain.

If I had to give up my pie, cookies, and ice cream I think I'd just go out and shoot myself. Life without ice cream? No way!

I didn't say ice cream, did I?

Re: Wanted: Fat Sailors

Timely topic for me. Starting at 30 years old, I've gained a few pounds every year since, and now 20+ years later, it has all added up. Body just slows down and needs fewer calories, yet we eat the same. Losing weight is meaningless if you just go back to what was done before, so one must make a permanent change.
I generally walk 3-5 miles every day for the last 10 years, so while I'm in good 'condition', I still gained weight over the years. (once I live on a boat, I'm going to need to replace that with something..)

So the new habit is really quite simple, and that is its effectiveness, and summed up by: eating every other day. This effectively cuts your calories about in half.
The on-days I can eat whatever, the off-days its only fruit and veggies.
So you don't deny yourself at all. Chips, ice cream, beer, bacon, donuts, no matter, but the next day, only fruit and veggies. So its really half psychology, thinking no more ice cream, and life is not worth living, is eliminated. Just wait until tomorrow for it.
It isn't too difficult to do. You would think binging on-days would be a problem,
but it has not been for me.

The other important thing is that this is actually more healthy for you.
Studies have shown with humans show they are healthier.
Basically your body gets a break processing the food.

So it works for me.

What's this about ice cream? I never eat the stuff..... But beer, now theres the rub. I am on the "bales of kale" diet....if cows and goats can eat it, it must be good.

I'm a type II diabetic and your fathers information is sound. Vodka and bacon is an ideal diet for a diabetic however the cardiologist will have a fit. I'm down 50 lbs over 18 months hovering just under 200 lbs now. Combination of exercise (walking, jogging, biking) and the dreaded D word.

Essentially I eliminated most carbs from my diet. Meat, fish, cheese, most above ground vegetables are fair game. Pasta, rice, most root vegetables and most dairy items, beer are off the table. Eliminating most all pre-processed foods has had an amazing affect on my energy levels. 20 years younger is the overused cliche that best applies.

My blood glucose and bad cholesterol levels are so good my dr may take me off all medication. When folks asked how I did it I tell them the same way you quit smoking, cold turkey. (Pun intended)
