The Pilgrim, and the Shawnee

Found this interesting article and video about John/Dennis Holland in Orange County, CA. He built a civil war era privateer in his front yard. From scratch. Fascinating man and articles. He's currently fighting prostate cancer and the city of Newport Beach to rebuild the Shawnee, a 72ft ketch in his front yard.

Along the same line. albeit a 'slightly' larger vessel, is the SS United States. She still holds the record for the fastest trans-atlantic crossing of any passenger ship. A pity to see her go to scrap. The Save the United States foundation has done some remarkable work in gaining sponsors to get her restored.

I remember this guy when I was living aboard in Mission Bay in the 80's. He inspired me to build my own boat, which never happened due to the ex. But at least I've been able to rebuild a vessel to my own specs.

I always wondered what happened to him and the boat. Thanks for posting this!
