Lobster Charters

As the industry struggles, some creative fishermen offer lobster charters

It turns out that Escape is indeed a commercial lobster boat, but she is a charter boat, as well. The smartly dressed people I saw aboard were customers, along for the ride. The fading lobster industry on Long Island Sound has led some creative fishermen to seek harvest from other sources of income.

Re: Lobster Charters

About thirty years ago my wife and I were on vacation in Maine and took a ride on a boat similar to Escape but not as pretty! The Captain had figured out that he could charge tourists to watch as he pulled his traps. I think he did three or four trips a day and covered his trap line by the end of the day. He would take out four to six people, pull a few traps and put rubber bands on the claws, and reset the traps. When we got to his last trap, it came up full of lobsters. The strange thing was they all had rubber bands on already! I asked him about this and he said (imagine a Maine accent here) "Them's good lobstas, they put on they's own rubbas". He used the last trap to store all the lobsters he had caught in earlier trips. It was a fun trip.

Re: Lobster Charters

HopCar,
From what I can gather, it has been going on in Maine & NH for quite a long time.
In Long Island Sound however, it is still a fairly new concept.

Re: Lobster Charters

If you get the chance, take the trip. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. You damnyankees are pretty clever, figuring out how to get two paychecks from one fishing trip. Ya'all make pretty boats too.

Oh I'll definitely go, but it might not be for a while. I'm supposed to go out on an oyster boat next month' and that should be fun too.
