How are your plans coming? It's winter in CO. How has your weather been? You guys are going to be able to find a way to make this all work, if it matters enough to both of you.

Fwiw, there are a number of "leapfrogging" [thanks for that Salty Monkey] cruisers, spending 6 months "back home" working, and 6 months exploring wherever. Some people are still making this sort of plan work, but they're not software engineers, either.
