Re: containers

I have never seen anything out there, ever. Now does anyone want any of this Japanese stuff I have? Lots of cool cleats, rope, fishing gear. And some of it has a neat little phosphorescent glow at night....
I hear there is even a dock down on the Newport shore...

containers

Cargo lost over the side in any waters is either the owners or the receiver of wrecks ( or equivalent ) hence looting it , on the high seas is just that , looting.

You are entitled to compensation if you save some of the cargo

Re: containers

Boatman 61 hit it, these things are not real easy to open on land but one bobbing around on the water probably not in the right orientation would be hard to open and probably head straight down if a door were opened. unless maybe it was packed with inflated innertubes or life jackets, not likely.

I heard that my cousin, Bozeman, MT CFer Sand Crab, lives aboard a bluewater Hunter 27 in his parents' driveway. He was heard to brag that looted items with a "phosphorescent glow at night" use less power than LEDs, and don't mess with yer night vision.

...........

Wouldn't it be a bummer to happen onto a container full of lifejackets?

I don't think they are as common as whales. But my boat was delivered to me 2 years ago with a sharp ding in the bow 1ft or so below the waterline. Came through the area of wrecked container-ship Rena. A one point impact with cracks radiating out. Too sharp to have been timber or whale, must have been rock or metal. OP didn't tell me and I didn't find out 'til next anti-foul.

Re: containers

How's this for a nightmare?

But the worst incident in the history of container shipping occurred in 1998 when APL China lost 406 containers in the north Pacific. The ship somehow managed to survive 70-foot waves stirred up by Typhoon Babs though photographs suggest just barely. Three other containerships also fell victim, resulting in more than 1,000 containers lost overboard. And these were just the ones we know about.
