Glad I read the thread. Gave me a smile, & re-schooled me on what I already knew (and sometimes forget).

Try telling them they're English and see how many teeth you have left..

Reminds me of when we were in Italy and a guy said to us, "I am not Italian. I am Sicilian." We love Italy.

Ireland?

Phil, Ireland has been independent of the UK for nearly 100 years. Either you missed the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty which created the Republic of Ireland, or David Cameron is imitating Putin and has sent in the British Army to take Ireland back by force, and I haven't read the news yet . . .

Unfortunately, our glistering yachts, powerfull tenders distrustingly padlocked to the wharf, our ignorance of local language, our impatience, are barriers between us and them.
Make the effort of learning 10 words in the local language (Hello, please, thank you , very good....) row to the beach , walk or ride a bicycle or use the local bus inland, rent that derelict motorbike for a few $ and a handshake as a contract, look for local help for that little sewing job, hang around beyond the beach front bar, get yourself invited by fishermen to raise their nets at dawn, ...
You will enjoy what is arguably the genuine side of the voyage
Wow - great comment and philosophy! This will go far to make you less of a hated tourist, and more of a world citizen visiting another piece of your home. Well said.

Haha, you sound like me man. Hippie parents, hippie offspring with a strong dose of reality.

Just look for the shitty boats with laundry hanging out every which way. I think anyone that can live on anything less that 29 feet has to be a either a glutton for punishment or a dirty hippie. We met these guys in the Abacos. Great folks, great fun.

In all seriousness though. Boat people are my people. I have met very few cruisers that I didn't like regardless of what walk of life you come from.

We met a retired Dr. on a Bristol 46 who looked and acted like Richard Dreyffus in What About Bob. By the end of the night I was sharing pot brownies with him and laughing hysterically in his cockpit. It's a great big world out there and people who live on boats all have the common thread: they don't buy into the BS and they have a love of boats, nature and beauty.

Good to notice this about Eastern Canada... and hopefully I will experience something similarly one day in Nova Scotia (East Coast of CAN) which has a long history in coastal communities and boating. :-)

See also Canada's Ocean Act (1996) and Ocean Strategy (2002) here.

Anywhere but Quebec.

Trying being in the Thousand Islands during the last week of July- a horde of attitude and ignorance consumes the land and sea. Though it is entertaining watching "anchor practice."

Hippies? Yeah, I was one of those, about 40-something years ago.

I got better.

I was asking a serious question. I don't know any people living in Tasmania that would not call themselves Australian.

Why do people who live in Sardinia not call themselves Italian?
