pirate Mozzie nets

I have just constructed a companionway roll up mossie net of soft netting. It looks like yer AW Mozzie net but seems to allow free passage to no-see-but-can-certainly-feel-ums. I'm wondering if those of you with the Bainbridge or similar smaller netting have had better luck? Or have no see ums simply evolved to allow passage thru any material? Can yer get any air thru the tighter netting? Thoughts and prayers welcome.

Re: Mozzie nets

Blue Crab,

There is no-see-um netting made. I bought some, years ago, from a camping supplies store. The downside is that it is so fine that it really impedes air flow.

What I use now is mosquito netting, but I spray it with "surface spray" (against in-flying cockroaches) , and then the no see um's seem to just avoid the area altogether. I do all the screens in one go, and re-do 'em if I get invaders.

No see ums can't bite you through cloth, which for me means gauzy cover-up style clothing where they are rampant. I hate 'em!

Treating bites with diphenhydramine, for the allergic reaction, and rubbing the bites with ice cubes helps give some symptomatic relief.

Some people find that lavender oil will keep them off you. And you can try DEET or other insect repellents, but the stuff's so gluggy on my skin, I don't like it.

Thanks Ann. Good advice all. Was kinda hoping for a magic bullet. It's 20:19 here, just getting dark ... I can almost feel the bastards grouping up outside ... maybe planning to storm the new netting. I'm going to get up (as I need a cold beer) and spray the netting with Deet. I'd use DDT if I had any.

At least the larger netting does work against mozzies which don't get bad around here til May 11 ... uh oh.

My use of the term "mozzies" makes me sound Australian amirite?

I also get the Dr. Oz newsletter ... if ya get my drift.

Think I'll have a Foster's.

Re: Mozzie nets

Try tea tree oil mixed 50/50 with baby oil. Works even when deep in the tropical mangroves.

Hi BC, you can buy no-see-um screen from most outdoor stores. Even Amazon sells the stuff. Skeeders (the Canadianism) are bad, and no-see-ums are are annoying, but it's the swarms of blacklies up here that give me real nightmares.

Will do. Good to know. Tropical mangroves are my next destination.

Sounds like these yellow buggers deserve their own song too ;-)
