Living Aboard in Puerto Rico??

Okay - so I am retiring early in a bit less that two years - the bad thing is that may girl friend has to work for two more years. She speaks Spanish (and I need to learn) and thinks she can transfer to work in San Juan. Any thoughts on living aboard there? Where the best place?

Hi Tim,
The only place I know of is San Juan Marina, just off Condado. It is a while ago I lived there (1986) but the Marina was at the developing stage then, but I have heard it turned into a nice Place. There are buses which run into town frequently and it was only a 5 minutes walk to the shops and bakery. Unfortunately I have not so good memories of that place.. I lost my boat in the Marina during Hurricane Hugo... but such is life.. no wooden boats for me anymore, built a steel boat this time:-).

I might suggest Boqueron on the west coast if were intent on anchoring out. Boqueron, Puerto rico

Marina Puerto Del Rey on the east coast is another option as well as the coastal town of Salinas on the south coast.

We pulled into the protected anchorage in Salinas year before last and rented a car for cash and cheap and drove to San Juan to pick someone up at the airport. There was a Canadian couple there who pulled in, dropped anchor and had been there 5 years when we anchored beside them. 2 real good hurricane holes right near by.

There's a good marina in San Juan called Club Nautico, past the cruise ship docks to the east of the entrance to San Juan harbor, and there is another not as fancy one right across the way from it but I've forgotten its name. Nautico was relatively cheap for transients, I don't know what its monthly costs are.
