True, the owner of the boat that hit mine had insurance but the guy refused to tell anyone who the insurance company was. It took 5 day's but with the help of the marina we got the name.

Re: Insurance For Mooring Fields!!!

My local club required $1M insurance liability to join. Nearby clubs and fuel docks are entitled to refuse service without proof of liability (rarely done however) The difference to my premium for this $1M is pretty small and I certainly can't afford to pay for a sunken recovery or fuel spill. No complaints from me. Bigger question is how much liability coverage does the mooring field operator carry for when their gear fails.....?

I can't speak to that. Did he offer to payout of his pocket? A minimal amount of damage would make sense. Were you asked to get an estimate? That may have been his objective? He may not have wanted a claim filed and wanted to know his options? Not trying to defend him but a little one on one conversation may have shed an entirely different light on it? Or maybe he was trying to screw you?

Actually the story I got was that he was trying to sell it cheap while we waited to find out who his insurance was.

Only about 1% of the moorings failed, in conditions that were far beyond the design. So no, there is no evidence the mooring instaltation were anything other than first rate.

However, about 70% of the boats blew off moorings because the owner supplied portion failed.
  • Most just chafed through.
  • A few boats had other boats hit them tangle, and dragged them off.
A significant problem is that stock cleats just aren't big enough (the Dinner Key mooring pendants were 1-inch nylon, which is what the conditions called for for 35- to 40-foot boats. How many 35-foot boats are set up for 1-inch rope? How many owners rig pendants for those conditions?

Trying to find out who his insurance company is, does sound suspect. I would think the marina would have that info. if that's a requirement. Oh well my wife might be doing their filing. :-)
