three countries: question regarding flagging

Hi All,

I have a bit of a newby question. I don't understanding much about how ownship and flagging works.

Example:

My country of residence is Colombia.

My citizenship is US.

Can I be a registered owner on a boat flagged in Canada, Spain, or somewhere in the Carib?

What about a fractional situation?

Thanks!

Steve

Re: three countries: question regarding flagging

Each country has its own rules on boat registration.

Several countries in the Caribbean are flags of convenience and don't require either citizenship or residency in order to allow boat registration. For instance the BVI (or the Bahamas or Barbados) will let you register a boat there under the "Red Ensign" regardless of citizenship or residence or even of boat location; but there are recurring fees associated with doing so.

Re: three countries: question regarding flagging

US will be cheapest and easiest given US citizenship.
Most flag-of-convenience countries will require you to set up a corporation there and they will be more expensive (initially and anually) anyway. It is only worth it if you have a good reason to pay the extra cost.
