Re: How much does a boat cost to keep it at the Caribbean beginning at BVI

I think one will allow for, at the very least:

- berthage (marina cost), $$$
- maintenance (boatyard time, works, replacement of old/worn stuff), $$$ or $$
- insurance, $
- taxes, charges, etc. ???

If you are thinking in the long haul, you may get some long-stay discounts on berthage in most places.

An Argentine or French vessel would have to clear US Customs before proceeding up our Mississippi River. A British vessel can proceed unimpeded--courtesy of the treaty that ended our War of 1812.

Although the local watercops, or even the USCG, might not be aware of it.
That is interesting; The War of 1812-14 was an attack by the US on Canada and mainly fought on Canadian lands and waters. Does that mean Canadian vessels can also proceed?

All these replies and even a history lesson, while the OP still hasn't posted anything much on the boat he is planning on buying, or the budget.
Could be an old 25k monohull or maybe, after seeing one, a brand spanking new Lagoon, which does matter slightly for the costs.

time, methinks.

I'm thinking to buy a monohull approximately 40 to 45 feet.
I prefer could be 2 to 5 years old.

Re: How much does a boat cost to keep it at the Caribbean beginning at BVI

Can you give us some examples of boats for sale you like?
I'm sorry, but I'm having a bit of a hard time believing someone can be looking for a boat that'll cost $150k easily and wonder about the costs of "docking and whatever other stuff a boat needs" ...
Or that someone who has owned several boats doesn't know anything about boat ownership and maintenance?

Don't mean to be rude, just trying to understand where you're coming from

I agree with the no-nonsense and "tough love" approach by Lizzy Belle and wish more folks on CF would consider that approach. Sometimes the questions posed on here belie a general lack of forethought or research or sometimes even common sense. And yes--often times it is true that if you have to ask, you can't afford it and the worst thing for any prospective boat owner to do is buy one he or she cannot afford and then not use it much..it just sets up the next go-around for the next unsuspecting buyer...Hmmm...it's really at a great price....Yeah...wow. It's a steal....so yes, if someone is thinking of purchasing a fairly new and large cruising sailboat and needs to question potential ownership costs..... well, do the math--and I mean that in every sense. There are so many books and articles written on this subject.....

The short answer. If you are only planning to sail twice a year, why on earth would you buy a boat? You could charter a brand new 50 foot boat twice a year, anywhere in the world for less money than you will spend on just "keeping" your own boat. Not to mention the constant depreciation of your initial capital. You can spend your time sailing rather than doing constant maintenance and the best thing, at the end of the charter you throw back the keys and walk away until next time. No Brainer.

Re: How much does a boat cost to keep it at the Caribbean beginning at BVI

Most, though not all people into sailboats are DIYers and get some pleasure from working on, fixing, repairing, improving and so on .... their boats. For them it's part of the experience of owning a boat... and when you are out there cruising it comes with the territory.

Owning is a continuing expense. Some of that is parking... perhaps most of it for a well found boat in good condition. But the boat is complex and maintenance expense is there... cannot be avoided and more so if the boat is sailed.

Some people pay sub contractors or boat yards to do all the work... step in their boat.... and sail off for their "time on the water". I suppose there are people who are very busy with family and work... and have less time to attend to boat maintenance and have the resources to pay for it... or don't have the tools and skills for the task.

It hardly makes sense to buy an expensive asset when you don't have a combination of time, tools, technical skills and money to take care of the boat including parking. Anyone who has owned a boat should be aware of this.

The OP hasn't been online since Feb, when he posted about buying an Oyster 56:
