Port Hope Yacht Club Evicted due to Radiation cleanup
This was just published in the 'Ontario Sailor' Magazine, April 2016 edition.
The 53 year old club ( with a club house, and 34 moorings ) has been told to leave the harbour by May 14, 2016. The town notified them in February, canceling their lease, to start dredging the harbour of it's radioactive waste. The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is the plan to cleanup the historic operations of a radium and uranium refinery in the municipality of Port Hope, dating back to the 1930s.
The Marina - CRATE MARINE BELLEVILLE may be the easiest place to move the club member's boats, as they have the room.

That's the second facility shut down on Lake Ontario that I know of this year.
Ship Shape in St Catharine's got shut down for not paying taxes or something along those lines.

It was actually a dispute over a long term lease between John Marler and Seaway Corp. that resulted in Mr. Marler refusing to pay rent.

Ah, I was just going by something i read in the Niagara Herald I think it was, but you know how newspaper articles can be.
He also sent out a letter to his boaters back in February stating it was due to back taxes.
I spent a winter there several years back, but was still on the email list. I sure am glad my boat isn't there now.

Curious since it's the owner that is responsible for taxes not the leasee. It's actually kind of a shame. He had major plans for that property. The architects drawings were pretty impressive but he'd been fighting terms with Seaway for a long term lease ever since to started out there. Without a long term agreement with Seaway it just was not worth the investment.

Ya, from Jon, dated February 9th, giving his boaters a heads up trying to rally support from his boaters before everything was locked down.
And warning them they may just have two weeks to get there boats out.

curiouser and curiouser. Never heard of a leasee being responsible for property tax before but I do know he had an ongoing war over long term lease terms for years.

Re: Port Hope Yacht Club Evicted due to Radiation cleanup
I honestly don't understand the whole thing, but as an attachment to the email he included the actual termination of lease notice that was posted on his fence.
The landlord was, as you say, the Seaway Management Corporation, but the property tax was owed to the city of St Catharine's. 7 years at about $15k a year, it was appealed back in 2014, the appeal was successful so they were only charged back taxes for 4 years.

Re: Port Hope Yacht Club Evicted due to Radiation cleanup
I found the newspaper article just now. I can't post the link because I'm on my phone but you can Google it. It's from the "Welland Tribune" March 23rd. The article quotes Jonathan saying something about taxes.
But like you said, it does sound like a dispute between ship shape and the SMC because in the article, he says he thought they should be responsible for it.

ShipShape is in the process of moving in to the property next door to Bruckmann Yachts in Mississauga and will continue repair and refit business there.
