Life is too short to work "normal" hours and be a slave to the "man".

Re: Living the Dream - What's Yours ?

Best example of 'livin' the dream' was a couple I met on a delivery in Cabo many years ago just at the beginning of the .com era. Both, in their 30's, had quit great jobs paying mucho $, sold their condo, car, furniture, etc and bought a Catalina 32 and were sailing the Sea of Cortez without a care in the world... name of the boat was Dessert First! They told me one evening over sundowners that they could always work and have kids and a house later, MUCH LATER, in life. I think they had it figured out... cheers, Capt Phil Now that I've retired from the sea, I'm a 70 year old ski instructor and still on the right side of the grass!

Well....we are sitting here in Bahia del Sol, El Salvador with the 2011 El Salvador Rally, enjoying the warmth of the sun and people, and coolness of the pool! I have to pinch myself to be sure it's real.

Re: Living the Dream - What's Yours ?

Alas, short of winning the lotto I can't give up work (and not having the focus of work might kill me anyway). However, long term dream is:

1. Have a job I enjoy (finally there I think)
2. Build up a solid retirement fund
3. Retire at 55 with my health and sanity intact (well, sanity no worse than is now)
4. Provide for my kid's education to start them out right
5. Sail, hunt, fish, camp, and boat from age 55 until 85
6. From 85 to 95, be the embodiment of all three "Grumpy Old Men" at the retirement home and give the nurses a run for their money

Thats the plan so far at least.

Re: Living the Dream - What's Yours ?

i did it right.
i stole my sons inheritance to buy my own boat loong ago
i had a very highly paid nursing bedside job in intensive care for 30 yrs, all ares of intensive care including management of pacu and triage in emergency rooms and other wondrfully educational positions.
i gave away a lot of money to folks needing more than i did
didnt save a retirement fund..oops
earned my place on disability rosters and get monthly checks
sail to places i dont have to put out lotsabux to survive
fix by self or find the correct soul to have fix my broken boat stuff
sail more than many
incur the wrath of those not yet under way...uhoh
read laugh and keep on sailing.....LOL
actually this was done step by step and to where ever with anything in my way. use or lose..is a fact.

Re: Living the Dream - What's Yours ?

I am living the dream.

Work half of the month, the other half go sailing and/or be on the boat somewhere nice.

May has been awesome in SE Asia so far. Chrystal clear waters in Malaysia, good diving, nice friends on board. Met nice people. Unbelievable, but absolutely nothing broke during the 9 day cruise.
Look forward to next month's trip! In the mean time I have the best job in the world.

Re: Living the Dream - What's Yours ?

living mine as well. living aboard in a beautiful city, working part-time (enough to pay the bills) on the internet, ie from the boat, and building towards leaving for offshore adventures later in the year. the goal: to leave with no set destination or schedule and wander free for a few years. to point the boat south until the equator, then west-ish.

Re: Living the Dream - What's Yours ?

I still have the same dream to sail out of Panama, and it's nearly 10 months later than my previous post. Sometimes life just gets in the way of things.I am back on the boat, and prepping her to go........i2f
