just watched movie never laughed so much no wind in the storm while putting up the largest storm jib I have ever seen muppet falls over the side then just casually climbs back on board,slowest capsize I have ever seen just walk around the walls.Boats full of water oh well lets go to sleep,Brilliant.

I agree and I see the film academy also agrees , pathetic movie, not just because its lack of sailing reality , it's just a crap movie that's all

Thats the difference. Hanks entertains us. Perhaps Redford could have yelled out "Spalding" occasionally it may have been entertaining.

Damn, the man gets two holes in the boat and rolls twice. His boat then sinks, and he is without fresh water due to the cap being off the vent for the jerry jug. He then manages to sink his life raft by catching it on fire. I feel sorry for the boat that rescued him.

How is it that it got such good ratings? This movie was awful.

Granted I've never been in this situation, but I'd think if water was coming in through a hole in my boat, I'd move with a little more urgency. Not to mention so many other things...

After being rescued though, I would have bought a lottery ticket - clearly his luck did a 180.

I just watched this film, and the whole time all I could think about is how woefully unprepared this guy was for any sailing adventure, let alone single handed transoceanic sailing.

1. No mechanical autopilot - this would have almost certainly saved him in the storm that capsized him twice.

2. No EIPRB, No backup {Radio, GPS, Compass, Sextant}

3. No urgency - why fight to survive if you have given up on life?

4. The ending was stupid. I'm sorry, but who lights a fire on their life raft.

As bad as #4 was, it is what got him saved in the end.

SM: he did. he had a wind vane, and it got ripped off during the roll. Would not have solved anything.

SM: True; but he had the sextant. Didn't know how to use it, and the raft nav was a joke.

SM: huh? I don't understand your statement. I didn't get he had given up on anything.

I thought the film fairer than I originally expected. He was SUPPOSED to be unprepared, fairly inexperienced, reliant on technology, and make mistakes. He didn't come off a total newbie, but he wasn't a boy scout either.

The film still had some gross mistakes, but not as bad as I anticipated.

Its surprising how many are/can be when the **** hits the fan..
Some freeze.. some panic.. some just give up..
and that's in company..
solo is a whole different ball game.. but then it is fiction..
That's when smoking roll-ups is nice.. something to distract one for a moment.. and give one time to reason things out..

Funny, how did a container hit the starboard with such power to cause a hole in the side? Did it have dual engines? And what luck, swagger'd his nav station, and he had no pieces of plywood chopped up ready for such a woodpecker.

Gives a real feel for what its like being out at sea for a long time and why we love it. I think he probably is a Sailor
