Hailing Port Question

I finally bought a boat and am doing the paperwork for uscg.

now this boat is themed. she set up in a pirate motif. I am wondering if I can use "Port Royal, Jamaca" as the hailing port, this being the most famous pirate town in history.

if you are able to receuve usps mail there, is a possibility, be3st to pass it by the uscg .

The hailing port need not be the same address you receive your CG documents at.

And I was always under the impression you could pick anything you want for your hailing port. Hell, you could say "Mars" if you want. The rules say you have to have a hailing port. Somebody can correct me if I am wrong but as far as I know they dont say it actually has to be a port or that it has to be a real place.

Here is the excerpt from the Coast Guard web site

"The "hailing port" must include both a place and a State, Territory, or possession of in the United States. The state may be abbreviated."

So you CAN pick a place other than where you get mail. But NO is doesnt have to be a port. But YES it has to be in the USA or a possession.

You can use Port Royal as there are towns of that name in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, South Caroline and Virginia (Wikipedia is your friend). You cannot put Jamaica though. For major port names boats often skip the State even though is strictly supposed to be there: Hong Kong, Boston, Monterey...

Do you have to register it? If it is not registered, you can put anything you want on the back. There is a carver 42 on my old dock with a port "Anywhere, USA". Not sure if they are unregistered or just taking their chances.

Were you planning to fly the Jamaican flag too?

"Port" can be any location in the greater U.S. and doesn't have to relate to your boat, home, or mailing address location. For instance, I could have used "Virginia City, NV" even though there is no navigable water there and neither I nor boat reside there.

Don't you mean "not USCG documented" and merely state registered? Nevertheless, individual states have their separate and varied requirements.

If the boat has no state registration numbers on its bow, check the boat's name under the USCG documentation listing on the internet. If neither is the case, the boat could be illegal.

There is a boat on the hard at Bert Jabin that hails from Durango, CO. Not the easiest place to try and float a 50'. I don't think the sewage lagoon is 50' of open water.

But as stated above, it must be a USA state, territory or possession. Maybe you could convince Obama to take Jamaica as a possession.

I live in Texas, but my hailing port is Marathon, Fla., which is my hometown...

Didn't we have this discussion a few weeks ago?

"Under new marking regulations, the hailing port can be any recognized place listed in the U.S. Department of Commerce Publication 55DC. This includes all listed places in the United States or its territories."

The Durango, Colorado hailing port was likely an owner's home town -- but there is a marina in Arboles, Colorado, forty miles to the southeast on the northern end of Navajo Like -- and members of the informal San Juan Sailing Club do hang out there, including the owner of a beautiful wooden Kettenberg which I visited a few years ago.

Furnace Creek, California (Death Valley) would seem like a nice hailing port.
