Teak deck replace with non- skid in Mexico?

I’m wanting to remove the old teak deck from my 1983 Baltic and refinish with nonskid. Boat is in Pacific Mexico. Have talked with yard in Mazatlan... any other suggestions for places that can do this work over the summer. Maybe San Carlos or down to El Salvador? Any input appreciated.

Re: Teak deck replace with non- skid in Mexico?

Welcome aboard CF, Baltictim,

We have one member, zeehag, who has some familiarity with Mazatlan, as she is currently working on her own boat there. Perhaps she will show up here on your thread in a bit.

It sounded from your post that you were planning to have the work done, rather than do it yourself. Generally speaking, one should be around to interact with the people working on your boat if you want *it* done right, no matter where you are located. You do know that summer is hurricane season there? I would recommend you have the work done somewhere out of the hurricane belt.

Ann

Re: Teak deck replace with non- skid in Mexico?

Thanks Ann,
We have been keeping the boat in Marina Mazatlan over the summers. Out of the hurricane belt could be Chiapas or El Salvador.....if anyone has a recommendation for someone who is capable of doing this work in another location I would like to hear. And yes I expect to be in attendance while this work is being done.

baltictim.... many have experienced work in yards in maz. personally i choose to avoid as much as possible many of the characters who present as marine company owners. for over a decade there has been undercurrent of displeasure with many of these characters. it is your choice to deal with them or others., if you are concerned on canes--best go to pnw or ensenada. chiapas gets tropical storms.
opequimar in nuevo vallarta is a respected yard. la cruz boatyard is a respectable yard. pricing varies widely. must make deal with the individual with whom you make arrangements for the work.
i have not heard of anyone removing the teak decking in mexico, although i am sure it has been done by more than one soul.
my refit here is unaffiliated with any marine companies present in mazatlan. i hire the whores not the pimps. saves me a whole world of money and hurt. work gets done as i request not as they wish. quality is on me not on the company chosen to do the work. i have watched the quality control issues as returns happen here in maz.
wherever you choose to have this issue addressed is yours to make.
guaymas, la paz, mazatlan, la cruz, nuevo vallarta, or chiapas and other locations have yards for choosing work or not to work on your boat. your shopping is the key.
let us know where you end up and how the quality of work is as compared to pricing.
even the characters with iffy reputations put out decent work if they are so inclined, so a referral to another locale may be hurtful to you if you have a rapport with a company here in maz.
