That would be a classic application for barrel nuts because of the low profile truss heads - no strips needed. They do require drilling holes larger, for the barrel diameter instead of the bolt diameter. And they are pricey. But they finish out beautifully.

The Farrier builders typically use the non-spike versions, in stainless, and bond them to GRP backing plates. The ones I have seen looked pretty slick. If I ever remove the carpet I'm going to have to give it a serious look. But I hate the idea of having to tighten all of the fasteners from the deck side. That is what I can't get past. Not good for bedding.
