observation on islande trader 41

Today I took a closer look at my new acquisition...I was surprised to see that this 28,000lb boat was so lightly built...I mean the hull above water line is less the hald the thickness of my H28...end worst it is not solid glass it is woven glass covered inside with some kind of gelcoat that seems to delaminate easaly from the glass.

its not a big deal as I will cover the interior wit a layer of fiberglass cloth and be done with it...I find it funny that such a beautifull boat with amazing woodwork has this type of hull material

I love the boat no mater what...but I am keeping my built like a tank H28.

incidently iv seen a few accidented sailboats at the yard...these new boat arent even fiberglass...they are built with composits i cant even identify...its scary

wow, jobi--mine is 2 1/2 in thick.. much matt but also has roving....and some weird kind of paint that peels off in sheets.......

then you must have a cored hull??

mine is much thiker under the water ligne and gets even more so near the keel...its suposed to be this way to suport the strain.

The quality varies a great deal between boats I have noticed. Mine was more like yours Steve. Never the less it carried me a long way from home and back.

no cored hulls in formosaland.is solid. waaay solid. mine spent a week on a breakwal lin santa barbara, kali- long before i bought her- rough water breakwall. onher side on it. had hull been cored-- would have been destroyed. she has a couplafew pits in her glass-- not bad--
these are all different... someone painted her with weird paint at one time-- many things happen to these boats.... is fun to refit them.. but after the refit--is solid....

its interesting to learn the differences between them...hope we keep finding new things about them.

on this particular boat from what iv seen...the erea on the photo iv posted is the only none suported spot thruout the boat...everywhere els the hull is suported by wood bulkheads...I guess this spot is just about the only place that cauld can??
woven must be prety strong as its not damaged other then cosmetic.
