Leak Detection Tablets in Water Tank

Is it safe to use the florescent dyes in the water tank to check for leaks, assuming you empty the tanks after use?

Some dyes are certified under ANSI/NSF Standards 60/61 for use in potable water; some are not.
Read the label of the specific product.

Why not just use some food coloring? Test to make sure it won't stain any fiberglass/gelcoat first though!

Much less dye is needed when you use UV and a blacklight, compared to pouring in a pint [sic] of food coloring. The telltale glow from UV stains is also much easier to see and recognize in dark spaces.

i have been able to find leaks without dyes or other means.... usually is a wet place near the leaking thing....

We have traced the water to one of three causes, all which are right next to each other: Water from the mast, water from the tank, or condensation... I ruled out anything from the holding tank because it doesn't smell at all and is clear. It may be a combination of all three things but probably not the holding tank because that sits "downhill" from where the water sits.

In an unrelated area, I did find water in a storage section in the middle of the boat that is completely sealed by fiberglass except for an access port at the top, and has no hosing, no penetrations at all. We cleaned that out and have not had a problem since, so I am leaning towards condensation for that area.

The other option is paper towels. Wrap any suspect hose with towel, towel under source of condensation and have a nap.

Whatever towel is wet is the source. If none then rain related.

We filled the tank with water and followed zee-hags advise

Seriously... filled and noticed that the water came out the top around the inspection plate. Not usually a problem unless we are sailing or bouncing around with a full-ish tank.
