Installing Universal SSI Mast Boot

Anybody out there have luck installing the plastic SSI mast boot with the mast in the boat? I don't understand how you get a bead of silicon under the plastic since you must first glue the boot together tight around the mast. Seems like the silicon would have to be installed around the top of the boot rather than between the boot and the mast which I would think would be better. I'm also limited in how high I can install the boot since about 5 inches above the collar there is a exit from the mast for a halyard.
