Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

metalicboats in Brazil do a nice work both aluminium or steel and for a very reasonable price - their on projects (36/43/50/65) are for sale for about R$ 100.000 (some USD 85,000) and are in buseness for over 20 years. You might want to check it out.

Someone says hard chine can do without longitudinals. I probably do not know the definition but anyways this is how it is done when it is done well:

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

Depends on length and number of chines. This looks to me a double chine and that changes all. The sizes of the chine play a dominant role.
But indeed a very well built sample as far as I can see.

Aluminium is a total different story.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

Aluminium is no different other than skill level and an increase in scantlings. The designer accomodates this.
However aluminium is not for the newbie by a long chalk!!!

Usually three times different in build cost to steel, but not forgiving of inexperience so the costs can blow out bigtime!

Something that has been done successfully is to combine a metal hull with a production fibreglass deck bolted at the sheer. Worked well with best of both worlds. As in a deck you could abuse, nicely moulded shapes. worked well!!!

That's Alubat Ovni inside I think. They stand up to use very well. Good engineering and quality welding / material sure helps heaps.

I think no longitudinals only possible with very thick plates. Then no weight gain. And maybe also not so easy to pre-form (roll) a thick plate!

Have built many using wheeling machines (bit like how mudgaurds for cars were originally made) rather than presses but home built rather than commercial ones. Good piccies....

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

As a former boat builder I would like to point out that the cost of the hull and deck is usually only 20% of the total for a finished boat. Depending on how fancy the interior gets.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

Some more of this yacht. This sort of quality building is hard to match there are not that many brands that make their own hulls.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

I am also on a path to plan on building an Aluminum Sailboat. From what I have been seeing around the Internet it costs around the 200k price. I personally think this is ridiculousness! Maybe some people don't really have time to put aside, but if you are speaking about a Liveaboard Sailboat we are talking about your personal Home for years to come. Why wouldn't you inspect every detail of your custom Sailboat? Now from what I gather Aluminum sheets and frames all together DO NOT cost 200k!. the Plan has to be simple and to the point. I have been months after months looking at design ideas and methods of Metal and Aluminum Boat Building. Basically anyone can come up with an Idea! You just have to share your Idea with an actual Marine Architect. Don't make difficult people! Think Frame and Sheets. The cost of building a single frame for a sail boat shouldn't be more than $800-1.5k (maybe just a bit more). Like others have mentioned here, find a good place and take some college classes on Aluminum Welding. The other hard part for me is not really looking for an Architect, but what Companies are available to produce the Frames and Sheets that I need!
Let me show you an image that inspired me of thinking "simplicity"

Take a good look at the Frames! Now ask your self Does it look complicated? Does it look messy? Because to me it looks simple and clean. Ok how about this image

Again Does it look complicated? Does it look messy? Honestly some people here should be ashamed of themselves they make boat building like it's made from tooth picks. When is said and done, Why can't you build a Sailboat like this?

Some people just like to piss on your Hopes and Dreams. . .

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

Welding is a 4 year apprenticeship (or boilermaker-welder). Sure; a welder will tell you how easy it is, but its his trade. For anybody with no experience of fabricating / welding to consider building a 35' boat is... well... interesting. And even supposing one could weld-up the hull and deck and scantlings, etc. could you also then do the fit-out? Assuming that you could, you still have the rig, deck gear, engines, tanks, etc. For a guy with no welding experience, I'd estimate the cost to build a 35' aluminium boat would be about double the cost of buying a professionally built one.
