Re: Converting a Closed Transom to an Open Transom

Sorry if someone already said this. Contact the manufacturer or designer/naval architect of your vessel if possible. Who knows maybe this has already been done and there is a stamped set of structural design drawings already on the "shelf". At least talk to them to see what their thoughts are on it.

I love it when i read stuff like this, it keeps me in business, i especially like house carpenters working on boats, man can they make a mess of it, but the owner says, he works for 1/2 your wages, then cry's when it turns out a balls-up and has to hire a shipwright to straighten it out.

Plenty of amateur boatbuilders do as good or better job than professionals. The professional is usually much faster though. Also professionals can usually carry out a larger variety of whatever is thrown at them. That's a generalisation I know. And I'm talking about NZ where I live where until imported production boats arrived most boat owners either built their own or finished off a glass hull and deck. Wright, Hartley, Young, Davidson, Farr, Pelin, Ganley are all NZ designers who supplied plans for home building. Now it is not so economical as imported factory made yachts may cost the same.
