Checking Bottom for Blisters

Is it possible to check the bottom of your boat for blisters while in the water???
Any experience?

Re: Checking Bottom for Blisters

It will be easy to see the really big ones, but the smaller ones will be harder to identify in the water. The big blisters will frequently weep when the hull is out of the water and drying out.

If I was concerned about possible blisters, I would haul out the yacht and have a look before I purchased the yacht. If I was concerned about blisters on my own vessel, I would just wait until the next haulout to get a definitive answer to the blister question.

Or just take a dive and feel along the bottom for small bumps, any where from a pea size to a US quarter+ size.

Of course it is. If there is any fouling growth at all you will need to clean the hulls first. Otherwise, assuming you have visibility in excess of a foot or so, blisters are very easy to spot.

Re: Checking Bottom for Blisters

If the bottom paint is thick, it will be difficult to see blisters unless they are very big and obvious or you REALLY know what you are looking for. A lot of time, blisters don't appear out of the bottom paint until the boat has sat on the hard in the sun for a bit.
