Yanmar OEM Exhaust Elbow or After-Market ?

I have a leak in my Yanmar 2GM exhaust injection elbow ( which explains the small rust stains that appeared on surrounding engine parts last year).

In Canada, I can buy an after market elbow for $180 or a Yanmar OEM elbow for $240. (Cheaper Yanmar part suppliers will not ship outside of their Yanmar territory).

Does anyone have any experience with the after market castings that would help me decide wether they are worth the $60 savings?

Replaced cracked exhaust elbow with after market part. What difference!!, my engine starts faster, runs smoother and has more power. The old elbow was about 70% restricted so the improvements are not suprising.

I'm sure I'm about to take a beating but I built one with black iron pipe for ~$30.00. No issues after about a year. I do keep a close eye on it. Don't use galvanized pipe it releases nasty fumes when hot.

It seems odd to me that the exhaust elbow on my boat which is arguably in the most corrosive enviroment on the boat (hot, salt water, diesel exhaust, flow at times, dead stagnant at times) is made of plain old steel while parts in far less corrosive spots are made of stainless steel, bronze, titanium... It is no wonder the exhaust elbow rusts through or plugs up with a mix of carbon and rust.

Why?

By the way, I bought the Yanmar replacement.

I don't think stainless is the best material for an exhaust elbow. Titanium if you can afford it but they are very pricey. Black Iron seem good and they can be changed readily and cheaply.

Exhaust elbows go bad very quickly wether they're stock,after market,used often or rarely. You might as well save some money you'll be replacing this one fairly soon anyway.

Who supplies aftermarket Yanmar parts in Canada? I'd appreciate a link or name.

Before we left SoCal in 1988, I had a local welder build me a thick wall stainless steel exhaust elbow for my Yanmar powered genset. After 22 years and 6,500 hours it is still good. I think it cost me about $85.

The Yanmar elbow is over priced, a poor design and made from inferior metal.

I made my own out of stainless. Many naysayers will poopoo stainless in hot applications, but as long as the water flows, the temp is going to be below boiling, which is insignificant to stainless
