Yanmar 3GM30F hard to start (How the ...

I have read all the posts on hard starting yanmars. I have decided to run a wire from the starter button to the solenoid . BUT , how the heck are you supposed to get to the solenoid? I can see it ,but I can’t get near it to work on it .
I raised the steps , I have taken out all the floor boards in the aft cabin.
I know what to do, I just can not do it. Very frustrating.
Please , I need some advice from you experts out there.
It starts sometimes on the first push of the button at the dock.
After sailing or when it blows 25 knots, I age one year for every button push.
This 331 Beneteau 2004 is new to me and want it to be reliable.
Thanks in advance!
This forum is invaluable!

Nice to see to our first post aldenfootcare .

There is never enough access and while I not familiar with your 331, I am familiar with the 3GM30F.

I would start pulling off the easy things first until you get enough access - like the air cleaner and the alternator. You may have to keep going and remove the starter motor.

Treat it as an exercise, you may have to work on the starter motor someday in the future.
.

You might have to cut some access holes and make up access panels if all else fails.

There is a saying that if you can see it or touch it (not necessarily at the same time), you have access

If you can see the solenoid you are good and the simple screwdriver is your friend. All you need to do is touch the batt term to the starter motor term. Don't worry about the solenoid terminal. The motor will sling out the drive gear without any help from the solenoid.

Thanks for the help!
I will try tonight to remove air filter and alternator and starter.
I’m worried it won’t go back on right.
Like you said, someday I will have to do this anyway.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks again guys!

Sounds like you are having trouble with the engine not cranking reliably. If so, it sounds like the common Yanmar issue with long wiring runs between thr engine and the panel. The common fix is a relay to reduce the current and thus the voltage drop in wiring.

If you are unsure that you can get it back together in the right order, remember your camera is your friend. Take as many snaps as you feel necessary and refitting stuff becomes less stressful.

Looking forward to hearing about a successful outcome
