Volvo Turbo Trouble

I've got a Volvo TMD-22 with a Garrett Turbo on it (Volvo Part: 3802019, Garrett Part: 466770-6). This baby has a wastegate on it that is prone to trouble. The wastegate is connected to the exhaust elbow and is subject to all the heat, salt and other fun stuff that the exhaust gets. The fun all started for me when the waste gate got stuck in the open position and as a result all the extra pressure at high revs blew my head gasket. I've replaced the head gasket and have the engine all back together but I'm having trouble with fixing this turbo. It is totally stuck and the Volvo dealer wants $2,000 US for a new one. The turbo works great, but the local turbo guy says he is trying to find a new housing (used or new) from Garett or someone to replace the waste gate.

Has anyone had any luck finding a part like this? Garretts are really common turbos in the auto world, but this one has that fancy marine waste gate on it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Todd

Re: Volvo Turbo Trouble

Todd, are you aware this is a Perkins Prima engine that was rebadged Volvo. Can't tell you if the turbo is the same though. The baby Mercuriser 1.7L engine has the same fault.

Yes, I saw the Perkins badge on the inside of the valve cover when I removed it. This reminds me of the joke: Why don't the British make bicycles? Because they can't figure out how to make them leak oil.

Re: Volvo Turbo Trouble

I ended up getting a new one from Hatton Marine in Seattle. They have a turbo shop that was able to get one directly from Garrett for $1,000 US.
