Volvo 2002

I am considering a larger boat. However the engine is an unknown. Volvo 2002. (I don't like inboards: fuel water seperators) The engine has not run in 4 years. Last time it ran was caused by some sort of short that started the engine while unattended (I do not like inboards: stuffing box)
So I thought ok worst case complete rebuild. How much? (I do not like inboards: injectors) The local Volvo repair man said he does not rebuild 2002's. And he is the factory authorized rep. ( I do not like inboards: FWC vs RWC).

The Volvo 2000 series (2001, 2002, 2003, 2003T) was the worst engine Volvo ever built, and that's saying something! They claimed they were state of the art but I think they were more experimental. They had a relatively short run, mid eighties to about 1990. I had one once and vowed never to buy a boat with a Volvo in it again. If you do get the boat factor in a new engine (not a Volvo) in the offering price. There's a reason even Volvo will not rebuild them!

Mine runs well for 22 yrs and old had one "major" problem when a valve spring broke so I redid the valves and injectors etc. Still starts right up.

Mine didn't. It used a quart of oil to motor 25 miles. I talked to Volvo, they said run it a season (May - Oct). Next season same problem, they said my warranty was now up! After much discussion and calls to Sweden they pulled it out and rebuilt it. Still wouldn't idle right. Went to three Volvo dealers on my way south, no one could fix it. Finally I bit the bullet and put in a 3GM30F. Still going strong 15 years later. I guess you guys got the good ones. My experience was so bad I vowed never to buy a boat with a Volvo engine again. It is telling that this series had such a short run. During the mid nineties the internet was rife with harrowing tales about the 2000 series engines. Here's one such page Volvo-Penta engine overlook
If you take the time to read you'll see a very wide ranging discussion on Volvos and many opinions that the 2000 was "the worst diesel ever".

I have a Volvo 2003 (3 cyl version of the 2 cyl 2002). It has never missed a beat, never failed to start, never given me any trouble, in fact.
