I've got an old heat exchanger around here somewhere. It came off a Perkins that was installed in a fishing boat. I don't know the size. Would you like me to send you a photo and measurements? It will be a lot less than buying new?

Kind regards,

SkiprJohn, thanks for the offer but I could not resist buying a new heat exchanger replacement from TAD together with a Exhaust Mixer Elbow. I installed the assembly on Sunday and checked everything twice before going topside. I cringed when I turned the key......She started right up. We checked for leaks; the exhaust seems to have a bit more pressure. The real test was throttle. I held my breath and pushed the lever....WOOOOOHOOOO! She reved past 4K revolutions. She had tons of power. We had to take her for a spin. We tiddied up and went. Before she would not go past 2 knots so getting to 4 knots was my goal. We revved her to up 2200 revs and we achieved 4.5 knots. I was in heaven. Temperature-wise in our entire run, she did not get past 140 degrees. I am changing the thermostat next but I am so happy, I cannot put into words. She runs like a dream.
I want to thank all for your ideas, help and encouragement. I have a "new" boat. Now onto sailing questions and posts.....thanks to all again!!!

I had exactly the same problem with my Perkins 4.108 it started fine but I could not get more than 1400 rpm without creating a lot of grey/white smoke. On checking everything I found that the aircleaner was totally blocked. A little time spent scrubbing the fine mesh screen inside the cowling resulted in being able to run at 2200 rpm with no sign of smoke. All the engine needed was enough air!

Hope this helps.
