Also, as you check along the wires, if you find a suspicious area, look for a voltage drop when the starter solenoid/switch is engaged (if it is even doing so).

I cleand up a couple voltage drops on the old Gulfstar that were only apparent when the starter was powered (by pressing "start" button). The reason is that the voltage drop was small when a small current was applied, but large when the large starte current was applied. It wasn't apparent with a meter, unless you had the starter motor running and/or circuit energized.

My problem ended up being a starter installation issue (previous owners!) so I cleaned up the circuit for no reason. But... on yours, as you work through, make sure to look for those voltage drops to be sure. Good sanity check.

I'd start with the wires under the dash that you can grab and make the trim work/not work. Look for the connectors attached to these wires and take apart and spray with something like WD40. Wires that can be moved and change operation ain't good, especially on a boat!!

Good job figuring it out. Its good that you thought it thru. I had a problem with the neutral start switch on my tractor once. It was a pain b/c I was on a job. Turned out I was able to fix it pretty easy but most embarrasing.

I think it'd be easier to cut a hole in the bottom of the boat to remove & replace the starter!

Tore the control apart, two little screws that hold the neutral safety switch had worked their way loose and on their way had shorted out the connections for the trim/tilt. My gigglin' the wires had shook the screw loose that's why the trim/tilt started working again.

Switch cleaner Then silicon grease (follow instructions) Wd40 drives moisture away but does not protect or clean long term
