Our new to us Yamaha 30 has a strong diesel exhaust smell. We have the local goto marine mechanic coming over this week to go through the engine, as a precaution. The surveyor had no responsibility for actual diesel operation.
After reading a thread on smells in the cabin, we realize we need to professionally clean all of the cushions, curtains, etc., as well as the engine compartment and keep it spotless from now on. No worries there, we're willing and able.
What other suggestions are there?

Find the diesel leak and fix it.You should never smell diesel.It's almost impossible to clean the foam that has been impregnated by diesel.

It sounds like you have a leak at either the exhaust manifold or the injection elbow, or possibly the water lift muffler.

Not what you want to hear, but another source of exhaust smell can be a leaking head gasket. We experienced that some years ago in a different boat. Kept working on the exhaust system, couldn't find the leak, great frustration. And then one day my hand accidentally dropped down next to the block to head joint and I could feel a pulsing gas stream... and that was the smelly leak.

Hope that yours is a loose hose clamp!

Well. I guess it is a good thing we planned to have the local marine mechanic go over the engine with us! We have a few thousand set aside for any problems that may crop up. Let's hope that we don't have to dig too far into that stash! LOL!

Exhaust leak WAS found! Being repaired within next two weeks. Also small leak from fuel filter closest to engine.
May well have the salt/raw water cooling system replaced with a fresh water heat exchanger system.
