Yes it is and "undersquare" engine, meaning the stroke is longer than the bore. This leads to lower max rpm but a more torquey engine at lower revs. I think displacement is around 750cc rather than around 950 for the higher revving 3gm30f.

Both are out of production now, but numbers built may have some impact on parts availability going forward. Not sure.

Take care of it and it will serve you well.

Edit,... would have to check, but 3gmd might be "square" at 72mm x 72mm.

Quick point of correction re 3gm30f seawater cooling. They were available with seawater cooling but I suspect few were sold as such. Many were converted using a factory available fresh water cooling kit that contained all the factory parts for freshwater conversion.

I bet that kit wasn't cheap. The manual has a seperate section for the conversion process.

Re: Age of Yanmar 22hp

We had a GMD in our 1983 Prout Snowgoose it's serial number was was 03058. (I only say was because we are currently in the process of installing a YM30AE). I would say your engine is newer than ours based on the Serial Number being larger.

The GMD ran fine, however with our plans we wanted a newer and slightly higher HP engine.

Re: Age of Yanmar 22hp

Speculating here,... but if '83 was the last year of production for the 3gmd and it is the first year for for 3gm30f then it could be the last of the previous engines were slow to sell. After all the new one is the same physical size and has more power by one measure. Which to most people may seen like an easy choice to go with "newer is better".

Probably not that uncommon for the engine to be manufactured some considerable time before a hull receives its HIN.

Re: Age of Yanmar 22hp

I have a 22 hp 3GMD of unknown hours in my 1982 Irwin Citation 34. I have converted it to fresh water cool and it runs like a new one. I have absolutely no idea how many hours are on it, and I assume it is the original engine in the boat. It burns no oil and at cruise of 2200 RPM uses only one half gallon an hour. As long as it works this well, I will do nothing to it except normal maintenance.

Re: Age of Yanmar 22hp

Bought my boat new in 1985 with a 3GMC raw water cooled(C=saildrive) serial # 00430.
Motor still going strong with nothing more than normal maintenance and following suggested "dont baby motor run it hard" also running motor at full rpm's for a minute or 2 now and then to cleanout. Also do proper rydlyme flush every few years.
Motor looked new until i spilled some rydlyme, now need to repaint parts.
and still with "original" mixing elbow.
Motor has between 2300 and 3100 hours, really not counting hours.
note...you will want to change internal zincs, how often depending on your location.
