1992 Yanmar 3gm30 VS Volvo1995 md2040

I'm thinking to put one of these in my WestSail 32 what do y'all think? Yanmar has little less than 1000 hours and Volvo has 1500

Early 90's 3gm30's had issues with premature piston land failures. Good engine otherwise. Either would do the job. Me I'd get the Volvo, only because of my issues with the 3gm

The 3GM30 has something like 27hp which is minimal power for a Westsail 32. Had a Volvo MD2b which was rated at similar horsepower in our W32. It got us around, would power at 5 knots all day in moderate conditions but in no way would anyone call it overpowered. Delivered a couple of boats with 35hp engines and they were much better in maneuvering in close quarters with their larger props and more hp.

The 3GM30 had two different transmission ratios available. One was around 2-1 and the other 2.5-1. Get the 2.5-1 and don't even think about the 2-1 transmission ratio. It's a significant difference in the size of prop that they will spin.

Sailor Chic, was your piston problem a wide spread issue with the 3GM30?? Have one of that vintage in my current boat. Just what I need is one more thing to worry about.

I heard one or two other people here, and a few others elsewhere that had piston land issues on the 3gm30's. but considering how many are out there it's not worth losing sleep over

I think you would not be satified with the HP of the Yanmar. I dont know the other engine. In a big fat hull like that, you want more hp for sure. I had piston failures on TWO 3GM30's and they were the same year : 1992. One at 500 hours and one at <2500 hours. BTW, those engines are not 30 HP so dont be mislead by the 3GM30, they only develop their max HP at extreme RPM's. Maybe that's why the pistons fail? At realistic RPM's they are maybe 18 HP... cant remember.

That's what I thought cheechako the Volvo Penta is suppose to have 40 HP. I currently own the 3GM30 and it has a piston failure. So should I rebuild the Yanmar or for the same price I can have the rebuilt Volvo?
