Naked mast myth - Buff performance with no lee side!

Cruisers are beginning to see and ask about my new rig for my 65ft trimaran.

If you follow the presentations you will see I elected to ditch the mainsail and only go with a big traditional lifting foresail.

My mast has no sail behind it. Some term this kind of mast as being a "naked mast". Further, some claim this hinders performance greatly.

I disagree, and have provided evidence in my presentations.

Just recently my hand-tight style of rigging supported my 62 foot mast and it stood against super-typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). She tore down the trees in front and behind my sailboat, but the mast stood fine. The eye of this typhoon made landfall within 30 miles of my sailboat.

This trimaran was built in California and designed by Jay Kantola. She was launched in 2000 after 8 years of construction by the owner who was a professional boat builder.

Chris White describes this style as "third generation" with computer modeled hulls. Attached is detail photo of the hull.

About a year back there was a Hughes trimaran from California that sailed into Malaysia. That owner reported the same issue that the former owners of my boat did. He was told to put on a big Bermuda rig and it would be easy to simply reef it if necessary. Both he, and the former owners of my boat, found their big Bermuda rigs too scary for a cruising boat.
