Lagoon 37 (TPI) vs Privilege 39

We are in the market for a smaller cruising cat and are currently looking at two different cats. I am looking for any information on either boat.

One is a 37 Lagoon TPI that has 2 new 20hp engines, new mail sail plus other extras like water maker, SSB, 2 honda generators.

The other is a Jeantot Privilege 39 that has 2 new 40hp yanmars with 300 hrs, plus extras like SSB watermaker etc.

We are looking for a bluewater vessel that is capable of crossing oceans and can be easily handled by a couple.

Thanks in Advance

I know of at least two Privilege 39s that have circumnavigated. The owner of one of them Maxingout is a regular here at the forum. You can find loads of info here Welcome to Maxing Out including videos of the boat underway. The boat is an excellent choice.

Don't know much about the Lagoon 37.

INHO Privilege is the better built boat. Apologies to all my Lagoon driving friends.

40 hp ( 2 20s) for the Lagoon is a little light but similar sized boats operate on 2 9.9 outboards. Loaded for cruising I think it should have more.

Now, what condition is each boat in? A primo Lagoon against a tired and beaten Privilege would be another story.

What about the location of the Helm?

The one thing we are a little concerned about is the location of the helm on the Privilege. It seems very exposed compared to the Lagoon where you have the protection of the doger and bimini.

A TPI Lagoon is highly desireable for the quality of the construction.

Both boats are good choices. We have cruised with friends on Lagoons and they love them. They are fast, comfortable and great cruising boats. We chose a Privilege 37 and are very happy with the choice. The helm position is the same as the Lagoon and we have full protection from sun, rain & wind under bimini. I posted some pics in the gallery under "svcattales". Privilege made only about 40 37's so they can be hard to find. Good luck with your new cat.

When I spoke with Jeantot about the privilege 37's I thin they said they made 48 of them. I thing he was asking about the earlier 39's

Great boats, we still love our. I do prefer the 37 over the 39. The 3 cabin layout is great and the accomodationg for two are a lot better than the 4 cabin configuration of the 39. There is a thread here that talks about some of the pleasures and challenges of owning privilege's.

Privileges are fairly renowned for their build quality! I don't imagine you'll find better in any other cat more than 5 or so years old. Seems like the newer boats are starting to get it and the build quality is quite good in many of the more contemporary catamarans.
