Greg, So, probably another $2500 for fuel and food? How long was the trip?

Catamaran Shopping: Move Cat from East to West Coast?

My total days on the boat were 39, six being lay days, half price. So I billed the owners for 36 days equals $12,600, Plus $533 for my travel expenses. So my total was $13,133. We probably used 250 gallons of fuel and provisions are about $20 a day for four of us.

That was Loreto, Mx, probably need to add four days plus any lay days in Cabo to get to San Diego. So probably a 45 day trip, with about 40 days underway. I’ve delivered several cats from Panama to San Diego and they’ve taken anything from 20 days to 26 days. Hope that helps

Also, we got through panama pretty fast with only two days waiting and two days going through. It was the off-season.

Sounds like a great trip. The new owners didn’t feel comfortable soloing from Cabo to Loreto?

We were nowhere near Cabo, we stayed on the mainland side until we could cross up towards Loreto

FWIW, Aspen who make proa powercats in Washington state quote approx. $25k for a transfer to Florida ... check out the very last item on their models’ price list - not sure though if that would be shipping or sailing!

You have way too much money. Pay some taxes and go sailing. This is why pirates target catamarans.

I took delivery of my Sailboat in new Bern North Carolina and after four days of outfitting and going through the boat from bilges to the top of the mast we headed south to South Carolina. By the time we got there I knew every little problem on that boat. Sailing it home is the best way to really own the boat.

Port of Stockton in California receives vessels from everywhere. I’ve been hired to pick up from there for delivery else where. It’s expensive!

From the west coast to the east, the winds and current are generally in your favor. Thats a a nice trip. Consider it. From the east coast to the west coast is uphill all the way. From Panama to Seattle is best done via Hawaii.

From the east coast to the west coast is uphill all the way. From Panama to Seattle is best done via Hawaii, or some other Pacific waypoint. Great trip if you have the time and money.

Zzmeyer, don't be afraid to negotiate with the shippers and play one against another. That's what I did and managed to get the cost down significantly. I shipped my catamaran from Florida to Ensenada, Mexico.

Forget about the wear on the boat. Just be patient and wait for good weather and the wear will be the same as frequent day sailing and you do want to do some sailing, right?
The Pacific coast of Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador is delightful.

Re: Catamaran Shopping: Move Cat from East to West Coast?

If I wanted to move a cat from Perth to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, which is a similar distance to the trip you are proposing, and I didn’t want to do it myself, I should employ a competent yacht deliverer for about AU$500 per day. That’s what we did to get our 38’ Seawind 1160 to Tonga (upwind) so we could take a few months to sail back to Queensland (downwind). Worked a treat.
