Union Polaris 36 rudder removal

Aloha forum members! I've just bought a union Polaris 36 and found hole in the rudder by the rudder post. Someone tried to resin it up but I was able stick my knife up in there. I thought best way to deal with it is removal. Can anyone let me know what I'm up against? Thanks!a

Pictures would help.
Are you hauled out?

I am hauled out and will get to the boat an post some pics . She is in storage Kailua Kona and I was planning on splashing her soon as possible. There are two stainless pins that the rudder swivels on with a separation in middle. Not evident how to get either out. Thanks for your reply.

Re: Union Polaris 36 rudder removal

Our previous boat, a LN35 had a flange with six bolts at the top of the rudder.
They were safety wired to a mating rudder shaft flange just below where the shaft exited the hull.
That allowed the rudder to be easily removed.
Is yours similar?

Re: Union Polaris 36 rudder removal

Thanks for your reply' everyone! On closer inspection I think I have my solution.
The strap that was previously broken and welded was not connected all the way around the rudder pin. The bolts hold it together an when I swiveled the rudder side to side I saw the separation in the back. I took out the bolts and the two sides separated and I can now get to the area that was needing to be repaired, grind and fill it with resin and fiberglass. When strap was repaired previously, they welded on a 4" strap covering the break, but only welded on the top and bottom, instead of taking it off. Probably didn't realize it separated. I'm having the back ground out and welded and filled so it will be a solid repair. Once I figure out how to post pic I will, not seeing my link for that yet. See if you guys agree with what I'm doing or have any advice. Thanks again!
