Thoughts on the Mariner 36 Ketch?

I have become enamored with this boat. I searched and found a thread from 2007, but wondered if there are any new folks since then who might share their thoughts or experiences with this handsome little ship.

Mike, I own a Mariner 40 ketch, we love her. Sailed her from CT to FL and will continue on. There is a web site at marineryachts.com, they have a whole section on the 36. Good luck

I bought a Mariner 40 at 19 while attending college. I lived aboard for the next 3 years and had some great times aboard her. She was a great boat for the time, but I am more performance oriented than any Garden design.

I do not think much of Garden designs, but man they can be pretty. So other than going for the AC you may find them a very good choice.

There are a couple of issues about the older Mariners. Most had fiberglass over plywood for cabin tops, sides, decks, companionways etc. These should all be checked for soft spots especially in the cockpit and the aft cabin bulkhead. Many had black iron fuel tanks which can last a long time but not forever.
If these are not issues with the Mariner you are in love with, go for it. I loved my old Mariner 35 and had it not had a wood hull I'd still have it today. Not the fastest boat in the marina but definitely the prettiest. Check the photo.

You are absolutly correct about your observations. We have replaced the iron tank with an Aluminum tank, I recently took the deck down to bare wood... and yes found a couple of punky spots, however, they were not too big and I was able to repair without to much trouble. As you said about the 35, We really love Tivoli and the overall performance she gives us. But do be careful and check the decks and cabin top closely for soft spots, especially where the deck meets the sides, probe it close.
