I looked. A 640 is not great but not awful. He might get a credit card to cover that used boat. Not what I would do but, I guess, fortunately I am not him.

It's pretty close to "awful." It's bad enough that you can't get the best rates, and you can't negotiate much on the terms. You pretty much have to take whatever they offer, and be glad that anyone is even offering.

You are correct on both accounts.

I wish people would do entire quotes. I know it is not intentional but partials always leave room for it being take out of context. I am guilty of not going back and reading the entire post of others.

Maybe they don't anymore. Mine did, this was in 2002 or 3. Had to get the certificates to give them. But no interest, no payments, could extend term whenever.
Paid it off and they gave me the certs back.
