Catalina C-38 draft?

I'm looking at boats.

One I walked through was a Catalina C-38. It's listed as having a 4' 11" draft.

But when I look at the page on saildata.com, it says 6.80'.

Looking at what's listed on yachtworld.com, I see some listed as 4'11", and some as 6'9".

Was the C-38 made with two different keep configurations?

Re: Catalina C-38 draft?

Might have been two versions, shallower at 4’11” with sing keel, 6.8” on fin keel.

Might have been.

The original S&S design included a very sleek swept-back keel that maximized good performance to weather. Catalina later offered an optional shoal-draft version to expand the market to areas with skinny water. The keel-stepped, double-spreader, high-aspect ratio rig and fine entry made the 38 extremely fast to weather and able to outpoint many competitors of its time.

Re: Catalina C-38 draft?

the Cat 38 was a rework of the S&S designed Yankee 38 which was a production one ton class racer/cruiser. When Yankee Yachts closed down, Frank Butler bought the molds and the design rights and started the Cat 38 design. He changed the skeg mounted rudder to a spade and may have changed the keel shape a bit, but the boat still was basically an IOR one ton class design... and went to windward well like all of those did.

I've always had a soft spot for that particular Catalina... an add-on from upsize lust when I was sailing my Yankee 30 many years ago and lusted after a Yankee 38!
