There is a part of the manifest destiny doctrine that helped Canada and has almost succeeded. That was the piece that said that the Americas were for the Americans (not US mind you but people living in the Americas) and that there should be no european governance of any territories or countries in the Americas. With the exception of the Caribbean and one country in state in South America this has largely been achieved. The US's policy on this for nearly 200 years was to get the European colonial powers out of the Americas.
