From an industrial stand point, it's very costly to just change out machine and hand tooling at the whim of somebody on the other side of the pond.

And on a lathe, have you ever tried to single-point cut a metric thread up to a shoulder? It's very time consuming and costly. Only the CNC's have that capability. In the valve industry 99% still use imperial threads (threads per inch) on metric valve stems.

The US is slowly making the change, but at an economic level ! When the tooling wears out it's replaced with metric. I already have two different tool boxes.
BTW where can I buy some metric wood screws?

Surprisingly, the Newfound Metals circular SS ports I bought required 6 mm hex bolts. So their tooling must be new!

Hey! Thanks for the link. I've needed some SS spirol pins. But still no metric wood screws.

I'm curious seeing as we are straying ...

We've used the term 2x4 forever. When I was a kid renovating homes I occasionally worked on a house framed in rough 2x4 but lumber from a yard was always 1.5 x 3.5 in. and while we still use the term 2x4 they are 38x89 mm now. I don't know about the mills in the states but the US buys a lot of softwood from Canada dimensioned this way. Are carpenters using lumber in two different sizes?

Change can happen slowly sometimes. I believe a 2.5 in. nail is still called an 8d nail in the US, a term that can't likely be tied to anything understandable for *200 years?

This all goes back before WWII. An 8d is 2-1/2" where as a 5d is 2".

What I hate are the chinese nails now. You hit them with a hammer and they just bend, and they rust so quickly too. If the wood is a bit hard I have to pre-drill a small hole first. Although, the nail guns seem to get'm in there.

What is sad that a country like Canada with only 33 million people created more jobs then the U.S. with over 300 million in January.

Many of us up here hope the U.S. gets their act together...they are our largest customer by far!

At least it's moving north and back to Alaska where it's suppose to be by this time of year. It's going to be a little wild on the Haida Gwai tonight I'm guessing.

Doing a closer shot it looks like the worst of it is staying outside of Vancouver Island. This shot is of the San Juan's at 7am Fri. morning. But it's a forecast, so we'll see.
