where does it all go?

Hi all, I have been on the hunt for boat bits a pieces to get my vessel sailing. Here in NZ we have a website called "trademe.co.nz" and in relation to such a small country as ours, it has heaps and heaps of boat bits for sale. But also because of our small country, the amount of gear is still limited. Especially for a vessel the size I have.
So out of curiosity, where on earth does all the bits and pieces go in the USA. I mean, there must be "boat loads;-) out there surely. I find very little listed on Ebay, or am I looking in the wrong place. I figured there must be gear around after I see the pictures of the devastation in Marina's you US guy's encounter from Hurricanes. With the number of obviouse write offs that surely must occur, I would have thought insurance companies or private individuals would be selling equipment salvaged. Plus just upgrades etc. So any ideas of good wesites for me to browse and keep a lookout?

Yup, Sailorman has a bunch of used stuff, some good, some not so.

I am over there almost every day and have found bargains on new and used gear.

Bought an EPIBR today for $610.00.


Know every employee on a first name basis and have sold stuff,
both on a commision basis and direct sale.

There was a similar place in St. Thomas back in the 80s when I did the live-aboard gig down there.
Forgot the name of that store, but remember the bargains.

Know guys that have bought SSB radios and other stuff on E-bay for decent prices.

Yes, there is bargains out there, but it takes some patience.

I must say though, I may be a little spoilt down here. I have been very fortunate to just pick up a brand new Bamar Furler for almost half price and a NZ$4500 brand new Furling headsail for NZ$500.00.

Maritime salvage places are really quite common in the States. Most major sailing cities do have some kind of marine exchange. In Annapolis Maryland, where I live and sail, Bacons and Associates has a very wide sellection. Ocean Outfitters also used to have a very nice selection but they lost thier building in a snow storm. There is a place on the Eastern Shore of Md that buys old boats at auction and demo's them for the parts. There used to be a marine swap meet on line that was very good for winches, engines and the like. I think it is long gone when its operator went cruising. A lot of gear just gets tossed. A used winch for example has comparatively little value as internal parts get hard to come by and the parts have a limited lifespan before bearings, pawlsockets, and gearsets need serious attention. Blocks are the same way.

Down under I brought the complete rigging of a ketch masts,booms and rigging for $3,000Aud from an insurance co but it was where is as is. Boats and parts are cheap when their stuck on the bricks.

Hi OzSkip, great to have someone else from reasonably close by on here. Yeah the insurance places idea interested me. But how did you track that down. I have only ever come across a 40ft launch from a finance company that the cient defaulted on. I could have got it for almost nothing. But I didn't need the distraction, so I turned it down. I think someone else did get it for nothing. It was costing the finace company more than it owed them with having it up on the hard.
