Someone post a PayPal email link where we can send money to help with transportation costs from Cuba to Alaska. Lots of us here would like to help.

I did not know Jay, or the waters he sailed in, but followed the thread closely hoping for a good ending. RIP

According to Delta Airlines Cargo division from Miami to Anchorage approximately $1000. Have not heard back from capngeo regarding should such a fund be established.

I'll ask his sister later (Alaska is way behind on the clock)

My condolences to Jay's family as well. I am sorry to hear he didn't make it. But, he died doing what he loved, and there are worse things than that.

RIP, sailor.

Life is a continuum of which we cannot control either end. The length of one's life is not as important as its quality and when a person has lived his/her life to its fullest, he/she has lived well. Jay died doing what he loved--sailing. He was more fortunate than most. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. He surely will be missed.

Sorry about what happened to Jay. After reading this I got the impression that he was quite a well liked person. R.I.P. Jay

I believe Raúl Castro is the President of Cuba now and not Fidel who retired in 2008. Fidel may of course still wield considerable power, though it would be strictly behind the scenes. Still, as a matter of protocol, any appeals should be made to Raúl.

I would be honored to return the body of Jay back to Alaska. I contacted the brother of the Senator of the great state of ALASKA.

You should contact the commodore of the Havana sailing club. He has the contacts and he is a cruisers friend. The only problem is that I forgot his name but Google should come up with it; he also writes pieces in the Caribbean Compass etc.

Yes please post a link. We would like to chip in. Very sad for Jay and his family. Never knew the guy but this is a good example of the internet bringing people together.

I've met a lot of nice folks on this forum and I've gone on to meet them in real life and they've turned out to be kindred spirits. I'm sure I would have found Jay to be the same. RIP.

Body of Fairbanks man missing off Florida found in Cuba

Tim Mowry/tmowry@newsminer.com | Posted: Tuesday, May 28, 2013 6:49 pm
FAIRBANKS—The body and boat of a 40-year-old former Fairbanksan who went missing while sailing alone in Florida a week and a half ago was found in Cuba.
Jay Rydberg was still tethered to his sailboat, a 39-foot trimaran, when it was found grounded east of Havana, his sister, Jill Lesseig, said on Tuesday. The boat was intact with its sails up when it was found, she said.
Rydberg left Fort Myers, Fla., on May 13 for an overnight trip to Key West in his trimaran, a sailboat with a hull and two outriggers. The U.S. Coast Guard received a distress radio signal from Rydberg's boat the next day about 30 miles north of Key West and began searching for him.
Lesseig said the Coast Guard called her Tuesday morning to inform the family that Rydberg's body and boat had been found. She didn't know exactly when he was found, how he ended up in the water or why he couldn't get back in the boat. Lesseig said she can only speculate it was "something catastrophic and medical."
The discovery of the boat and body provides the family with the closure they needed to move on, she said.
Rydberg, who grew up in Fairbanks, had lived in Key West for about a year.
