Planning to sail some day....

Looking for mentoring through forum medium. Have so many questions that few books and youtube videos cant seem to answer thoroughly.

Such as:
- does one just drift at night if on a long journey alone or even a couple.
- what's the cheapest source of cabin heat?
- how would one treat a choppy situation at night, or day, for that matter?
- and so on...

Re: Planning to sail some day....

There are lots of books out there that will answer some of your questions, and at least give you an idea of what it is all about. Personally, my interest in sailing was piqued by the book "Vagabonding Under Sail" written by W.I.B. Crealock. Not sure if it's still in print or not, but a good read.

Just go to Amazon and google "sailing adventure nonfiction." You'll come up with a hundred options.

For short answers to your questions... Well, actually, the only short answer to any of your questions is "it depends." You really need to be more specific as to what kind of sailing you're talking about.

Cheapest source of cabin heat - That would be a tropical climate

All I know is that the most expensive source of cabin heat is a wife.

(Mine made me install a diesel furnace.)

Re: Planning to sail some day....

Most of us tend to divide the night into "watches," a system where someone is standing watch throughout the night hours. If you were only to drift at night, you'd turn a long passage into a really long passage, and there's no compelling reason to do that. There are compelling reasons to maintain a proper watch at all times.

The good news is that on most passages, the wind gods work just as hard at night as they do during the daylight hours.
