OceanVolt or Torqeedo user experiences?

After scanning through a bunch of pages in this thread: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...or-172720.html

... I got desperate

Any real life sailors (cruising mono or multi) present who are currently or have formerly been using OceanVolt or Torqeedo hybrid propulsion systems? Experiences? Can we ask you more questions?

For the tender, yes, brilliant, love it (1103C) - no petrol on board, what's not to like? For the yacht, forget it.

Can't speak for using one on a yacht but I have been happy with the one on my tender. Only real problem I have had is using it on some fresh water rivers with weeds fouling the prop. In decent water it is great. Another issue is the torque. Using one on a tender is much different than a gas outboard, you have 100% torque at low speed which means jack rabbit starts. First time I twisted the gas it was a real neck breaker; but it was easy to simply twist slowly.

It's getting late here.

When I log on tomorrow, I'm sure there will be a bunch of large yacht owners' testimonials posted here

P.S. Sorry for miscapitalizing Oceanvolt in the title

We have the Torqeedo Travel 1003 with the extended range battery and love it. We charge the battery with our solar panels.

Have you considered the E-propulsion motor? Very popular here in So Cal (where they're made) and significantly quieter than the Torqueedo at about the
same price and performance specs.

New 1103 Torqueedo is totally silent now - apparently the old ones whined, not any more

Re: OceanVolt or Torqeedo user experiences?

I called Torqueedo about the whine at low power settings and they told me the motor was geared unlike other electric trolling motors that are direct drive. They said that caused the whining.

Yes, the new torqueedo is now similar to the epropulsion. I prefer the build quality feel of the epropulsion and it being two part rather than three, but they're pretty similar. I use the dinghy way more since ditching the petrol outboard

But I think OP is asking about auxiliary power for a bigger boat, not the dinghy versions

YES! The dinghy motors are awesome (I almost bought a Torqeedo for us but then I didn't because the workout I got last summer rowing was great as well ).

I'm really curious to find some real life inboard electrical users.

Oceanvolt advertises they have sold 200+ of these. Torqeedo lists some high profile Gunboats among their customers, but I guess there are a other, less extraordinary boats as well.

So, anyone present here? Maybe not? It would be wonderful to hear some real life feedback.

I did find one Instagram account where the newly converted Oceanvolt sailors were experiencing a lot of problems with their [servo]prop. But that's it, and one instagram snippet testimonial isn't very much for well-founded conclusions.

You need 8 Kilowatts of lithium batteries per hour for your boat and I can not see it covered in solar panels at the moment or better said "yet". It will be like cruising without a motor unless you have a sizable diesel generator. A friend of mine sells E propulsion for boats and refused to sell me the set up so we could stay friends. LOL

Can you tell me how you charge them from the solar panels ?
Are you using the orignal 220/110V charger through a convertor or did you use the 12V adaptor from Torqeedo ?

Or maybe with another (direct) connection to your solar system ?

thanks,
Greg

Re: OceanVolt or Torqeedo user experiences?

You can purchase the connecter from Torqueedo that will allow your 12v system i.e. solar panels to charge the Torqueedo battery. The connecter has a cigarette lighter male end that you plug into your 12v cigarette lighter socket. The motor comes with a connecter that you attach directly to your battery bank that allows you to charge using 12v. I've never used it, the cigarette lighter socket is easier and I have one on my pedestal so I charge my battery in the cockpit and out of the way. I just just need to make sure it stays in the shade.
