Coffee or tea for me, as I no longer partake in the libations. I do enjoy hanging out with those who do though. For them, I keep a little rum around and some beer. Do not get too much complaint.

Neither can I, but whisky (without the "e") is a different matter entirely. Especially a good Islands malt like ArdBeg or Talisker.

Irish Whiskey is a finer product entirely, tripled distilled. smoooooth

This thread got me thinking. What exactly was in those barrels when they served British sailors their daily "tot of rum". Was it the same stuff we call rum or something else?

In 1749 Admiral Edward Vernon induced a watered down rum, which because known as "grog" as vernons nickname was "old Grogam" ( the cloth he liked to use).

Up to that time sailors had been issues with Rum , predominately from Jamaica, it was introduced in 1655 after the capture of that island, before that a beer ration of about 10 pints a day, was effectively a substitute for water ( the beer was very weak compared to todays beer) . ( or French Brandy had also been used, I might add)

After 1655 the rum ration was half a pint. sailors would "prove" that the rum was full strength by dousing it in gunpowder and checking if the powder would still burn.

Concerns from do-gooders meant that "grog" was severely watered down rum , approx 4:1 water to rum, full strength rum was traditionally severed at midday, whereas Grog was served at 10 am and after 4pm.

The um ration was ended in 1970 in the Royal Navy. Seamen were given an allowance of 3 2/3 pint beer cans. Royal NZ Navy was the last to maintain the rum ration into the 1990s , the US Navy having discard the practice in the 1860s

Gin with or without tonic
beer - prefer Pale Ale and especially micro-brew pubs. I always try the local stuff. Often more interesting and less costly.

There are a lot of availability/cost issues here that may make one more flexible.

I prefer bass ale or old speckled hen for beer, and you must have a selection of wines from red to white, as some situations call for different wine. as for the spirts, woodvine reserve is a fine bourbon, I try to stay away from gin, some cheap ginger brandy goes well with ginger ale, I don't get along with tequila, and mount gay extra old is always aboard. (after all, it is bad luck to go sailing without a supply of rum) for vodka I go with kettle one, its nice and smooth and goes well with everything from jello to whatever soda you want. everclear is only good for soaking cherries or gummie bears, rumple minze is mouth wash you can drink and yeager is another good stand by. so as you can tell, my sailboat doubles as a 31ft floating bar

We are living for now in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our most recent claim to fame is the title, "BEER CITY USA" We have an especially large number of brew pubs and micro-breweries. Many are making some really nice beers. A pub crawl here takes several days to cover them all - upright. One was organized last summer to be done by bicycle. We will miss that.

Has anyone done the Scottish Malts Cruise? It is a boat rally. We have it as a definite must do. Malts Cruise

Okay, I now have a new item on my bucket list, that Malts cruise sounds like the cat's pajamas. And that Gosling Family Reserve, sounds delicious.
