So if being super tall is a handicap. What is being short ??????

Being short is an inconvenience. Us short people know that having a lot of headroom, means you have a little brain!

I've owned 4 boats, of which one, the Cal 3-30 gave decent headroom. The other 3 had such low headroom that someone of my height - 6' 2.5" barefoot - had to go outside to change their mind. While one must accept that boats to a certain length rarely have sufficient headroom, getting as close to the needed headroom as possible is something to consider.

So long as there's somewhere you can stand upright, even under a hatch, you might be okay at a pinch. I'm 6 foot but so many vessels provide for 5'10" headroom and you can never forget it.

I've lowered the sole for headroom on a couple and put a hatch in another. Very few boats years ago had headroom, with 4'6" being the standard - the view was that you went below and sat.

These days, few are prepared to put up with the inconveniences of yore. It's salutory to recall that, not too long ago, it was said that more people had circumnavigated in a Herreshoff H-28 than any other single design. And while it's a beautiful hull, life below was rudimentary.

So unless the boat is super cheap and perfect in every other way, my advice is to keep looking. Because you know what they say: act in haste and you can repent at your leisure.

In the old days 4'6" headroom was considered 'safety at sea'.... its harder to get tossed across the cabin if your sitting and sliding across the cabin....
I'm 6'2" tall with 4'6" headroom... boats anchored round me think I'm a friendly sorta guy... always popping my head outa the hatch... nodding and smiling at passing dinghys...

Age has a lot to do with it too.

When I was younger with a Westerly Nimrod (18') it did not matter at all.

Now at 55 with resultant back, knees etc. If I can't stand up then I won't cruise in it.

I guess I am just spoiled.

I'm 6'3". Had a 29 I had to crouch in. Never hit my head, but its not fun. The older you get the harder that is on your back. When I bought the boat I intend to cruise on standing headroom was a requirement I had going in.Makes a big difference to me.

After owning two boats with less than adequate headroom I would never consider a boat that doesn’t have enough headroom.
Too much neck and back pain for my liking.

I think you'll find this possibility is limited to full keel type boats with deep bilges...
the post early 80's production boats have no bilges to speak of.... so short of removing the floor and walking in the bilge area stepping over the beams to gain a couple of inches... its a no go
